CONTINOUS CERTIFICATION

Continuous Certification is a professional development program created by the American Board of Surgery (ABS) with the other member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties.

The ABS Continuous Certification Program documents a surgeon’s ongoing commitment to professionalism, lifelong learning, and practice improvement following initial board certification. The program requirements include a full and unrestricted medical license, hospital or surgical center privileges if clinically active, professional references, and participation in CME and practice improvement activities.

As part of Continuous Certification, the ABS is transitioning to a new assessment process that will gradually replace the traditional recertification exam. Rather than one recertification exam every 10 years, ABS-certified surgeons will use the new assessment process to demonstrate their surgical knowledge on a continual basis. The new assessment was introduced in 2018 for general surgery, with other ABS specialties launching over the next few years.
