Vision: a declaration of mid- or long-term goals. Long term: promote access to optimal surgical care for children throughout the world, especially in resource-limited settings Mid-term: identify partners in resource-limited settings for APSA to promote its global health pediatric surgery vision Short term: guidelines to identify and recruit APSA partners from resource-limited settings to promote APSA GPS vision Mission: statement of purpose. – Developing partnerships with overseas colleagues to facilitate the exchange of information and resources. – Advocating and encouraging responsible international service and surgical education by APSA members and trainees. – Facilitating the educational opportunities of surgeons caring for children in resource-limited settings. – Identifying and supporting areas of research relevant to pediatric surgical care in resource-limited settings.

APSA Travel Fellowship
For surgeons early in their careers working in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), please consider applying for the APSA Travel Fellow, which will sponsor your travel to the APSA Annual Meeting. In addition, we are offering a new program whereby Travel Fellows will be able to choose an area of special interest and visit an institution in the US or Canada for 4-6 weeks for an observership and specialty training either before or after the APSA Annual Meeting.
MD1world is a confidential forum for discussing patient care. After being accepted as a user, physicians can log in and provide patient details, including images and photographs. Other pediatric surgeons will provide online discussions and responses to questions asked. Visit the MD1world website.
Global Initiative for Children’s Surgery (GICS)
GICS is a recently formed coalition including providers from all children’s surgical subspecialties. The projects are driven by surgeons working in low- and middle-income countries, helping to define needs, design practical solutions and promote research. Visit the GICS website.
Global Paediatric Surgery Network (GPSN)
Recently joined with GICS, the GPSN was formed with the goal of providing resources and promoting collaboration between surgeons and institutions providing care in low- and middle-income countries. Visit the GPSN website.
The Global Alliance for Surgical, Obstetric, Trauma, and Anesthesia Care (The G4 Alliance)
The G4 Alliance, represented by more than 70 worldwide organizations, advocates for the neglected surgical patient, aiming to put surgical care on the health agenda of low- and middle-income countries through strategic relationships with the World Health Organization and policy making bodies. Operation Giving Back (OGB)
OGB is the humanitarian arm of the American College of Surgeons, helping to coordinate care in low-resources environments in the US and overseas. Visit the OGB website.
World Federation of Associations of Pediatric Surgeons (WOFAPS)
WOFAPS consists of more than 100 pediatric surgical societies around the globe, organizing educational meetings and other gatherings. Visit the WOFAPS website.
Guidelines for Responsible Humanitarian Pediatric Surgical Care
These guidelines, endorsed by the APSA Global Pediatric Surgery Committee, the AAP Delivery of Surgical Care Global Health Subcommittee, the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia Committee on International Education and Service, and the American Pediatric Surgery Nursing Association Global Health Special Interest Group, are in the process of being published and will be posted here soon.
